Winnie Odinga is Ruto running mate 2027
The passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has cast his daughter, Winnie Odinga, into the political spotlight, as she hinted at a potential return to local politics.
During her speech at her father’s final funeral service held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Siaya on Sunday, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP expressed her readiness to “come back home,” suggesting she might be gearing up for a move into Kenyan politics.
Winnie took a moment to express her heartfelt thanks to President William Ruto for being there for the family during their difficult time of loss.
“Your Excellency, our people truly appreciate you for honoring our father. Thank you for standing by us. And just so you know, in case you’re curious, I’m ready to come back home,” she said, speaking directly to the President.
Observers noted that President Ruto, who was seated next to Mama Ida Odinga, shared a brief smile in response.
Winnie’s journey in politics kicked off in late 2022 when she was elected to represent Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly. This came after she was chosen by both the National Assembly and the Senate on November 17, 2022. She officially took her oath of office on December 19, 2022, in Arusha, Tanzania, and is set to serve a five-year term that will wrap up in December 2027.
In the wake of Raila’s passing in India due to cardiac arrest, Winnie has stood as a beacon of strength, often maintaining her composure amidst the sorrow felt by family and supporters. Her steadfast presence has led some political analysts to see her as a possible successor to her father’s political legacy, although they do warn that matching his influence is no small feat.
At the funeral held at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Winnie shared a heartfelt and personal reflection on her father’s last moments, describing how he took his final breath in her arms.
She encouraged Kenyans to draw inspiration from her father’s strength and dignity. “You all need to walk with your heads held high, and carry yourselves with pride, knowing he left us as a true gentleman,” she expressed.
Winnie praised Raila’s lifelong service, emphasising the lessons he imparted. “The biggest part of me died on October 15, 2025. But the spirit of the lion roars on forever. The king is dead, but long live the crown.”
