Raila last book before he died
Raila Odinga’s sister, Emily Oginga, recently shared that the seasoned opposition leader had been quietly engaged in a significant political endeavor just before his passing.
While delivering his eulogy on Sunday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, she highlighted that Raila’s last project embodied his lifelong commitment to fostering African unity and driving transformation.
Emily revealed that Raila had started working on his third biography, which he planned to dedicate entirely to exploring Pan-Africanism and envisioning the future of the continent.
“Raila’s last political project, which he did quietly days before his death, was a third biography dedicated purely to African Pan-Africanism and what the continent needs to do to move forward,” she said.
She mentioned that the book was intended to capture his experiences, lessons, and vision for Africa’s political and economic freedom, particularly in breaking away from Western dependence.
However, Emily didn’t share what would become of Raila’s unfinished work after his unexpected passing, which occurred while he was still writing the biography.
On the other hand, Raila was no stranger to writing; he had previously chronicled his life and political journey in several published works.
His most prominent book, The Flame of Freedom, published in 2013, provides a thorough account of his struggles during Kenya’s quest for multiparty democracy, his time in detention, and his aspirations for a fair and united nation.
This autobiography, co-written with Sarah Elderkin, has become one of the most cited political memoirs in Kenya’s contemporary history.
Earlier in his career, his political life was also documented in Raila Odinga: An Enigma in Kenyan Politics, a 1991 biography by Babafemi Badejo.
Although not penned by Raila himself, the book delves into his early political influence, imprisonment, and contributions to Kenya’s democratic reforms, setting the stage for understanding his significant impact on the nation’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, the seasoned politician is scheduled to be laid to rest at his father’s home in Kang’o Kajaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County, in a private ceremony conducted by the Anglican Church of Kenya.
