“He died in my arms”, Winnie Reveals
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, has opened up about the heartbreaking final moments she shared with her late father, revealing that he passed away in her arms while they were taking a walk in India.
In a heartfelt tribute, Winnie dismissed widespread rumours circulating on social media claiming that Raila had been bedridden or too frail before his passing. She painted a very different picture — one of a man full of determination, discipline, and quiet strength even in his final days.
According to Winnie, her father had made it a daily routine to go out for short walks as part of his recovery process. Each day, he challenged himself to go a little further than before. “Every day he was waking up and walking,” she said. “He would start with one round, then two rounds the next day. That morning, he pushed himself to five rounds. He died strong, with dignity, and with pride.”
Her voice broke as she recalled the exact moment her father collapsed. “I was with him in India when he took his last breath. He died in my arms,” she shared, her words carrying a mixture of pain and admiration.
Winnie went on to describe herself as “the luckiest girl in the world” for having had Raila Odinga as her father. She added that her siblings — Fidel, Rosemary, and Junior — were equally blessed to have shared life with such a remarkable man who inspired millions across Kenya and beyond.
Since the news of Raila’s passing broke, many Kenyans have expressed admiration for Winnie’s strength and composure. As the only one of Raila’s children present during his final moments, she has been praised for her courage, grace, and the dignified way she continues to honour her father’s legacy.
Raila Odinga’s death marks the end of an era, but through his daughter’s moving tribute, Kenyans have been reminded of the man’s unwavering spirit and the deep love that defined his final moments.
