CS Murkomen Declares Friday Holiday
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in honor of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga. The announcement was made through a gazette notice released on Thursday, October 16, and comes as the nation continues to mourn the veteran opposition leader and statesman, whose passing has deeply affected millions of Kenyans.
In the notice, Murkomen explained that the declaration was made under Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, which grants the Cabinet Secretary the authority to designate specific days as public holidays for the purpose of national commemoration or celebration. He stated that the day will be dedicated to celebrating the life, leadership, and immense contribution of Raila Odinga to Kenya’s political, social, and democratic landscape.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, the 17th October, 2025, shall be a public holiday in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga,” read part of the gazette notice.
The announcement was received with mixed emotions across the country. Many Kenyans expressed gratitude for the government’s gesture, describing it as a fitting tribute to a man whose political career spanned more than four decades. Raila Odinga, fondly referred to as “Baba,” played a central role in Kenya’s struggle for multiparty democracy, constitutional reform, and good governance. His leadership left a lasting impact on the nation’s political history.
Across the country, various activities are expected to take place on the declared holiday, including memorial services, candlelight vigils, and moments of silence in honor of the former Prime Minister. Both national and county governments are anticipated to organize official events to commemorate his legacy.
Raila’s death has drawn condolences from global leaders and dignitaries, reflecting his influence not just in Kenya but across Africa. Friday’s public holiday will allow Kenyans to come together in unity and reflection, paying their final respects to one of the most influential figures in the country’s political journey.
