Detectives are looking into a businessman’s claims that he was followed and robbed of Sh7 million he had in a bag at a petrol station off Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.

The victim was about to board a public service vehicle heading to Bondo, Siaya County, with the cash tucked away in a small school bag when the incident occurred on Wednesday night.

He works for a company involved in gold mining in parts of Bondo.

According to police, he mentioned that he had left Eastleigh in a private car and was dropped off at the Total petrol station near ABC Place along Waiyaki Way to catch the public service vehicle when the robbery took place.

Ismael noted that he had previously carried such a large sum of money without any issues using the same transport.

On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, he said he was getting into the matatu that had just arrived around 9 pm when two men on a motorcycle pulled up.

He reported hearing a gunshot, and as he turned to see what was happening, the gunman snatched the bag with the cash.

The assailant then jumped onto the waiting motorcycle, and both he and his accomplice sped away.

As they fled the scene, the gunman fired a second shot into the air, causing other passengers, motorists, and petrol station attendants to take cover.

The police believe the attackers had inside information about the businessman’s movements.

They tracked him from Eastleigh to the spot where the robbery occurred.

At the scene, two spent cartridges were found and have been sent for ballistic analysis.

The area is well-monitored by security cameras, and the police are optimistic about identifying the gunmen to bring them to justice.

As of Friday, no arrests had been made, but detectives mentioned they are following several leads regarding the suspects.

Such incidents often occur when the attackers are tipped off about cash being transported.

The police plan to interview individuals the victim met in Eastleigh as part of their investigation into the incident.

Nairobi’s police chief, George Seda, confirmed that they are actively investigating the robbery.
“A team is on the ground and we believe the suspects will be caught soon,” he said of the attackers.
He recommended that anyone carrying large amounts of cash consider hiring police escort services to ensure their safety.

Past incidents have shown that these situations often arise after someone inside leaked details about the money’s movements, according to police reports.
