NACADA Seizes 1,000L Kangara
A suspect has been arrested, and over 1,000 liters of the highly dangerous illicit brew known as Kangara have been seized following a dramatic early-morning raid in the Grogon B area of Korogocho, Nairobi. The operation, carried out on October 10, 2025, was a coordinated effort between the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) and the National Police Service (NPS).
According to officials, the sting targeted a major illegal distillery that had been secretly manufacturing toxic alcoholic drinks for distribution across the local community. The crackdown came after weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance, as residents had raised alarm over increased cases of alcohol-related illnesses and fatalities linked to unregulated brews in the area.
During the raid, enforcement officers confiscated over 1,000 liters of Kangara, a crude alcoholic concoction made using harmful chemicals and fermented residues, as well as quantities of Chang’aa. The team promptly destroyed the recovered brews to prevent further consumption. Samples were, however, preserved for laboratory analysis and use as evidence in court. The arrested suspect is expected to be arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts, where he will face multiple charges related to the production and sale of illicit liquor.
Officials from NACADA emphasized that this operation was not a one-time event but part of a broader nationwide campaign to dismantle the illegal alcohol trade. The ongoing Rapid Results Initiative (RRI), spearheaded by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, seeks to eliminate the production, distribution, and sale of unsafe alcohol that continues to claim lives and destroy families across Kenya.
NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the trade, describing them as “merchants of death.” He stated:
“To those who continue to peddle this poison, your time is up. This is not an isolated operation — it’s a sustained nationwide crackdown. We will hunt down the distilleries, the distributors, and the sellers. You either abandon this trade or face the full force of the law.”
Authorities have vowed to intensify surveillance in hotspots known for illegal alcohol production, urging local residents to report suspicious activities. The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that those behind the deadly brews are held accountable.
This latest raid serves as a strong message to illegal brewers across Kenya that their days are numbered, as the government continues its relentless fight against toxic, unregulated alcohol.
