The Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, has issued a strong warning to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment officers, urging them to steer clear of any malpractice as they prepare for the upcoming recruitment exercise.

During a briefing at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday, October 9, Kahariri emphasized the critical need for integrity, transparency, and professionalism throughout the recruitment process.

He reminded the officers that the faith Kenyans place in the military relies on a system that is fair, open, and based on merit.

Kahariri also shared that the KDF has adopted advanced technology in its recruitment efforts to enhance verification processes and combat corruption.

He made it clear that any officer caught engaging in actions that compromise the integrity of the recruitment exercise would face immediate and serious disciplinary measures.
Kahariri emphasized that corruption in the recruitment process poses a serious threat to national security, as it jeopardizes the quality and trustworthiness of the personnel who are joining the ranks.

“The reputation of the KDF has been built over decades of discipline and service to the nation. This exercise must reflect our core values of integrity, patriotism, and excellence.

“Technology is now at the heart of our recruitment process, and it is our duty to ensure it is used effectively to eliminate human interference and corruption,” he said.

On Sunday, September 15, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) announced an upcoming recruitment drive scheduled for October.

In their announcement, KDF mentioned that this exercise will be looking for General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, including both Regular and Graduate candidates, as well as Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and women, and Defence Forces Constables.

The Ministry of Defence emphasized that the recruitment process is completely free and open to all eligible and qualified individuals.
The ministry also warned the public to steer clear of bribery or corruption in an attempt to sway the process, emphasizing that such actions are considered criminal offenses.

They encouraged everyone to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station, military camp, or by using the hotline numbers provided.

“Any individual found to be involved in recruitment-related malpractice will be arrested and prosecuted.

“The Public is urged to report any incidents of recruitment malpractice to the nearest Police Station or Military Camp or call the dedicated Hotline numbers: 0726419706/0726419709,” the notice read.

KDF has pointed out that those who are successful in the various categories will need to go through verification and training at specific KDF institutions.

They’ve also laid out the minimum academic qualifications, which include a KCSE grade of B (Plain) with at least a C+ in English, Mathematics, and one science subject for GSO Cadets (Regular). For graduate cadet applicants, a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university is a must.

In other news, Members of Parliament from Nairobi County have voiced their concerns over the KDF recruitment advertisement.

In a joint statement released on Thursday, September 18, the MPs representing the 17 constituencies in Nairobi, along with the Senator and the Woman Representative, called for an immediate review of the recruitment plan, labeling it as discriminatory and unjust.

They argued that the current setup overlooks the county’s residents by merging multiple constituencies into just a few recruitment centers.

According to the advertisement, applicants from Embakasi Central, Embakasi East, Embakasi South, Embakasi West, Kamukunji, Makadara, and Starehe are all instructed to report to Nyayo Stadium.

On the other hand, candidates from Kasarani, Ruaraka, Mathare, and Roysambu have been directed to the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, while those from Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, Lang’ata, Kibra, and Westlands are grouped at Jamhuri Grounds.

The legislators contend that this arrangement is unfair compared to other counties, where recruitment centers are set up at the sub-county level.

“The merging of recruitment centers for over a dozen constituencies creates a logistical challenge and starkly contrasts with other counties, where each sub-county has its own designated recruitment center, promoting a more decentralized and fair approach,” the MPs stated.

As a result, they are urging the Ministry of Defence to reconsider the plan and establish separate recruitment centers for each of Nairobi’s 17 constituencies.
The MPs also called for affirmative action to be put in place, aiming to create more opportunities for urban youth. These young people often struggle with limited job prospects due to high population density and unemployment rates.
“We expect a formal reply to this demand within seven (7) days of the date of this letter. Failure to take immediate and decisive action on this matter will be seen as a deliberate act of discrimination against the constituents we represent.

“We trust that you will give this matter the serious and urgent attention it deserves and will act swiftly to rectify these glaring disparities,” the MPs further said.
