Kibera Man Jailed for Sodomy
A Kibera court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old boy in the Kichinjio area of Nairobi.
The accused, Abdikadir Abdullahi Hassan, was convicted after Senior Principal Magistrate Irene Kahuya ruled that the prosecution had presented solid evidence proving the case beyond any reasonable doubt.
According to the prosecution, Hassan lured the young boy, identified in court documents as A.M.K, into his shop before committing the horrifying act. The incident was reported to the police, leading to Hassan’s arrest and subsequent trial.
During the court proceedings, four witnesses took the stand, each giving emotional testimonies about the events surrounding the assault and the devastating effects it had on the young victim. The court also heard that the child has continued to suffer deep emotional trauma, including recurring nightmares and a strong fear of going outdoors.
In her judgment, Magistrate Kahuya condemned the act as a grave violation of trust, particularly since the victim and his family had placed confidence in the accused. She expressed concern over the rising number of sexual offenses in the region and emphasized that such crimes destroy the innocence of children and tear apart families.
The magistrate handed down a life sentence under Kenya’s Sexual Offences Act, stating that the punishment should serve as a stern warning to anyone contemplating similar offenses. She stressed that society must protect children and ensure that perpetrators of such crimes face the full weight of the law.
Following the verdict, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) lauded the court’s decision, describing it as a major victory in the ongoing fight against sexual and gender-based violence in Kenya. The ODPP also praised the swift handling of the case, which was concluded within ten months, underscoring their commitment to ensuring timely justice for victims and maintaining public confidence in the judicial system.
