Majority Leader hospitalised after attack
Kiambu County Assembly Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke is currently recovering in hospital following a disturbing incident in which he was reportedly attacked by suspected assailants shortly after attending an official county function in Kikuyu Constituency.
Mucheke, who also serves as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kalimoni Ward, is said to have been confronted by a rowdy group in the Mai-A-Ihii area of Karai Ward on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The incident occurred moments after he participated in a bursary distribution event organized by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, an initiative aimed at supporting needy students across the constituency.
According to eyewitnesses, the event had progressed peacefully for most of the afternoon, attracting local leaders, parents, students, and residents who had gathered to benefit from the education support programme. However, tension reportedly began building toward the end of the gathering when a group of unidentified individuals allegedly stormed the venue and disrupted the proceedings.
Witnesses claim the situation quickly turned chaotic as stones were hurled toward leaders and attendees, forcing many people to flee for safety. In the confusion that followed, Mucheke was reportedly struck and sustained injuries, prompting his security team and supporters to rush him to a medical facility in Kikuyu Town for urgent treatment.
“The function was calm and well organized until goons invaded the area and caused panic. Stones were thrown indiscriminately, and the Majority Leader was injured during the attack,” said one MCA who attended the event but requested anonymity due to security concerns.
Efforts to reach Mucheke for a comment were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained unreachable by the time of publication. Sources close to his office, however, indicated that he was responding well to treatment and remained under medical observation as doctors monitored his condition.
The incident has since sparked concern among local leaders and residents, with some questioning the level of security provided during public county events. There were unconfirmed reports suggesting that police officers allegedly failed to provide adequate security despite claims that county officials had submitted a formal request ahead of the bursary distribution exercise.
In addition to the injuries reported, several vehicles belonging to leaders and guests were damaged as panic-stricken attendees scrambled to leave the scene. Broken windows and dents were reportedly visible on some cars parked near the venue, highlighting the intensity of the chaos that unfolded.
Political observers have warned that rising tensions during public gatherings could undermine development activities meant to benefit local communities. Residents have called on security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure accountability for those responsible for the violence.
By the time this article was published, police authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the attack or confirmed whether any arrests had been made. Investigations are expected to shed more light on the motive behind the disruption as leaders continue to condemn violence linked to political events in the county.
