Murder suspect dead after hanging himself with socks
Police in Bomet County have launched investigations into a disturbing incident in which a murder suspect reportedly died by suicide while in police custody at Longisa Police Station. The incident has raised serious questions about safety measures within police holding cells and has briefly disrupted operations at the station.
The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Antony Njenga Kariuki, was found dead inside a toilet cell within the station. According to preliminary reports, Kariuki is believed to have hanged himself using his socks, which he allegedly tied to the door. Officers on duty discovered his body during routine checks, prompting an immediate response and the temporary suspension of normal activities at the station as investigations began.
Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michal Singa confirmed the incident and provided details surrounding Kariuki’s arrest. The suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, Caroline Ngetich, a teacher at Cheptagum Secondary School in Chepalungu Sub-County. Kariuki had been held at the station as police continued to piece together evidence related to the case.
According to police reports, the alleged murder occurred about a week earlier in a shop where the couple was reportedly living. Investigators believe that Ngetich was strangled during an altercation. Her lifeless body was later found outside the shop, raising alarm among local residents and prompting a swift police response. Officers processed the crime scene before transferring the body to the Longisa Hospital mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination.
Residents and members of the teaching fraternity have expressed shock and grief following the tragic death of Ngetich, describing her as a dedicated educator whose life was cut short under tragic circumstances. Her death has left the local community mourning and demanding justice.
Meanwhile, police have stated that investigations will now focus on two key aspects: establishing the full circumstances surrounding Caroline Ngetich’s death and determining how the suspect managed to take his own life while in custody. An internal inquiry has been launched to assess whether standard detention procedures were followed and if any negligence may have occurred.
Authorities have assured the public that the findings of the investigations will be made public once completed. As the case unfolds, it continues to draw attention to the challenges faced by law enforcement in handling suspects in custody and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved.
