Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has kicked off the 2026 edition of the Masomo Bora program, which aims to lend a helping hand to students in all 65 day secondary schools throughout the constituency.

In a statement made on Tuesday, January 13, the MP announced that starting this term, the school fees for all day secondary school students, including those in senior secondary schools, will be set at Ksh500 per term.

Additionally, Nyoro mentioned that students will receive daily meals, with chapati being served every last Friday of the month.

“School fees for all Day Secondary School learners will be Ksh500 per term starting this 1st term of 2026.

“All learners to be served lunch at school on all days, including Saturdays; githeri for 3 days and rice for 3 days. Uji for ‘tea’ break and chapati to be served for lunch every last Friday of the month,” he said.

To supplement existing support, Nyoro announced that the Kiharu NG-CDF will allocate an additional Ksh10 million for revision materials, adding to the Ksh20 million provided previously.

“Additional Ksh10 million for revision materials to be provided by Kiharu NG-CDF this financial year. Ksh20M has been provided in the previous years,” he added.

Beyond learning materials, over Ksh50 million will go towards school infrastructure, with a particular focus on laboratories.

“More than Ksh50 million to be provided for additional infrastructure, with a bias on laboratories. More has been provided since the programme started,” the lawmaker further said.

To boost enrollment in schools that are either struggling with low numbers or are just starting out, Nyoro announced that all students entering Grade 10 at these institutions will receive free uniforms.

“All students joining grade 10 in the 20 identified schools with low enrolment and the new schools (those starting this year) to be provided with uniforms for free,” he continued.

Nyoro added that in a bid to support co-curricular activities, all 65 schools will receive an extra Ksh50,000 to supplement the activity kitty, while Ksh 900,000 has been allocated for prize-giving celebrations, split equally between Murang’a East and Kahuro sub-counties.

“All the 65 Day Schools will be provided with an extra Ksh 50,000 to supplement the activity kitty since capitation is not enough. For music festivals, games, and co-curricular activities. Ksh900,000 is provided for prize-giving celebrations. Ksh450,000 for each of the two sub counties (Murang’a East and Kahuro). This is to reward the best performers without having parents pay for it,” he explained.

Teachers and school principals are getting some well-deserved recognition for their hard work, with exciting paid trips to Mombasa and Dubai available as rewards!

“The best improved teacher per subject in each of the sub-counties to get a paid-up trip to Mombasa. This will include the previous year, since some were participating in the marking of KCSE when they could have travelled.

“Principals from the best and best-improved schools per ward to have a fully paid-up trip to Dubai. Of the 6 wards, twelve Principals will travel. Those who have travelled to Dubai before may choose to travel to Malaysia,” the MP noted.

Other measures include remedial support capped at Ksh1,000 per term, no additional registration or service fees, coverage of bus maintenance for school transport, and inclusivity for students from across Kenya.

“Schools with remedial arrangements capped at Ksh1,000 per Term. No other payment or registration fees of any nature in all the institutions.

“Premiums and general service of buses owned by Day Secondary Schools to be paid for by the programme. Since they are common utilities accessible to and by any public institution. The programme covers all learners, including Kenyans from other parts of the Country as long as they are in any of our Day Secondary Schools,” the MP concluded.

Just a week after Nyoro raised concerns about the government’s funding for schools in the 2026 academic year, he spoke out again. On Tuesday, January 6, the lawmaker took aim at the government for providing a mere Ksh109 per student to support schools for the current term. He dismissed the official claims about capitation disbursement as false and misleading.

“Some of these things we are not begging. As leaders, sometimes we are just telling the government to do what they need to do. Last week we told the government clearly that they needed to release a circular in terms of capitation or we were going to do some unspecified actions,” he stated.

Nyoro accused the government of failing to adequately fund schools for the year 2026, noting that only Ksh109 has been sent to institutions to cover operational costs for the entire term.

“So I’m also now calling the government. You have not funded schools in the year 2026. You’ve only sent 109 shillings only to run our schools for this term,” he said.

Nyoro has put the government on notice, warning that he will rally Kenyan parents if they don’t release enough capitation funds by midterm. He emphasized that parents have every right to demand proper funding, especially since they pay taxes and the constitution guarantees free basic education.

“Failure to which we are going to mobilise all the Kenyan parents to debate what is their right. And their right is that they pay taxes. Free basic education has been there in Kenya.

“The Kenyan parents cannot continue to observe silently as the government continues to tear down and annihilate the right of learners in Kenya by not adequately funding the free basic education,” he warned.
