Pastor Resigns after Church Invites Ruto
A cleric from the Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM) church has stepped down from his role, citing interference from politics as his reason.
Charles Wachira, who was leading the JCM branch in the United States until recently, decided to resign after the main branch in Nairobi extended an invitation to President William Ruto for their third anniversary celebration.
Ruto was expected to join the church’s special service on Sunday, February 22.
Wachira expressed his discontent with the president’s invitation, arguing that it sends a troubling message to the church community, especially given the concerns about the current government’s actions against young Kenyans.
He pointed out that Ruto’s presence at the church contradicts the values of righteousness and justice for those who are suffering.
“He has resigned, citing serious concerns regarding leadership principles and recent public engagements that have deeply disturbed many believers- especially Gen Z, who are crying out for justice, accountability, and moral clarity during this sensitive national season in Kenya. Pastor Charles Wachira believes spiritual leadership must stand firmly on truth, righteousness, and the defense of innocent life,” a statement from the cleric read.
Wachira made it clear that he wouldn’t support any efforts to exclude those who are seen as having acted against the country’s common good.
“When leaders’ actions lead to confusion, division, or moral unease among their followers, it’s crucial to take a stand based on principles,” he stated.
Bishop Benson Kiengei is the one leading the church.
A poster announcing Ruto’s visit sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many people commenting on the current political landscape.
Critics of the president’s upcoming visit claimed that the church’s resident bishop was aligned with the government and was using his position for personal gain rather than for spiritual guidance.
Some members of the congregation pledged to skip the service, while others announced their departure from the church altogether.
