Tour Guide Vanishes on Mt Kenya
A family from Katheri village in Meru County is heartbroken over the mysterious disappearance of their loved one during a hiking trip on Mt. Kenya. On December 23, Samuel Macharia seemingly vanished while guiding two Japanese visitors up Africa’s second-highest mountain.
With 15 years of experience under his belt, Macharia was part of a seven-person team attempting to reach the summit that day, but he went missing before they could make it to the top.
The group, which included guides, porters, and the two Japanese guests, set off from Nanyuki Town in the morning, eager to conquer the snow-capped peak.
They entered Mt. Kenya National Park through the Sirimon Gate, but somewhere between Old Moses Camp and Shiptons Camp, disaster struck.
Macharia disappeared along the trail, leaving behind his personal belongings, which initially led to speculation about a planned disappearance.
For the past 15 days, his family has been supported by friends who have braved the challenging terrain and harsh weather in their search for him.
Despite the difficulties surrounding his disappearance, his relatives remain hopeful and continue to believe that he is still alive. They say the family has refused to give up, even as days turn into weeks with no clear answers. According to them, hope is what keeps them going during this painful period.
They believe he may be hiding or seeking shelter in remote villages, possibly without access to communication. The family is confident that once conditions improve or he finds help, he will return home safely. Until then, they remain united, praying and waiting for his safe return.
Macharia’s family is also expressing frustration with the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) rescuers, claiming they haven’t provided enough logistical support for the search. However, KWS has stated that they are collaborating with both the family and the police to locate Macharia.
As each day goes by, Macharia’s loved ones remain hopeful that they will find the missing mountain guide, whether it’s good news or bad. They believe that this would finally bring an end to the anxiety that has been weighing on them for the past two weeks.
