ODM Not For Sale
Nyando Member of Parliament (MP) Jared Okello has firmly rejected the rumors that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party is up for sale, emphasizing that the party is still under the strong leadership of Dr. Oburu Odinga.
While speaking at a widows empowerment program in Bondo, Okello addressed the recent speculation that some members of ODM were in talks with former President Uhuru Kenyatta about selling the party, calling such claims misleading and completely unacceptable.
“ODM cannot and will never be a party on sale. We can only negotiate with other people as equal partners, and that does not amount to selling a political party,” Okello stated.
The legislator didn’t hold back, firing tough questions at those supposedly involved in the negotiations. He wanted to know who gave them the green light to come up with such a plan, how much they were asking for the party, and what kind of deposit they had already received. He urged them to step forward and make their intentions clear to the public.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthew Owili, and other ODM leaders stood firm, asserting that ODM boasts strong leadership, with Dr. Oburu Odinga recognized as the party’s top figure.
He called on everyone to unite behind Odinga, referring to him as the party’s torchbearer after the loss of its founding leader.
Wandayi also pointed out that ODM is currently in discussions with President William Ruto’s government, although they haven’t formed a formal coalition yet. He mentioned that the party aims to negotiate for a bigger role in the government as they gear up for the 2027 elections.
Dr. Oburu Odinga reaffirmed his leadership role within the party, putting to rest any concerns about ODM’s future. He emphasized that the party will keep advocating for inclusion in government and ensuring that its supporters benefit from national initiatives.
The event also focused on supporting vulnerable communities. Interior PS Raymond Omollo commended President Ruto’s administration for initiatives that provide widows with title deeds, access to healthcare, and assistance for orphans. He highlighted that elderly citizens and people with disabilities are now receiving monthly stipends of KSh 2,000.
“For the first time, we have a government that truly cares for all of us, especially the most vulnerable among us,” Omollo stated, encouraging residents to sign up for these programs.
