ODM demands a big share from Ruto
The National Assembly Minority Whip, Junet Mohamed, is pushing for a larger share of government positions for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as we gear up for the 2027 General Elections.
During a condolence visit to the home of the late former Lugari MP, Cyrus Jirongo, on December 21, the MP urged the President to clarify what positions ODM can expect before any potential coalition for 2027.
“If they want our ODM votes, they need to lay out the positions on the table and specify how many they’re offering us,” Junet insisted.
The Minority Whip emphasized that the party will present its demands during coalition discussions, countering claims from some party members who had previously cautioned against pressuring President William Ruto.
“There are some people saying that ODM should go to Ruto without conditions; that is a no,” the ODM leader said.
Junet pointed out that even though the President has allocated several Cabinet positions to the ODM party as part of their broad-based agreement and has initiated development projects in areas where ODM has strong support, the party is still asking for more.
The MP asserted that ODM is the largest political party and believes it will bring in more votes for the President, which he feels justifies their request for additional positions and development support from the President.
However, Junet made it clear that ODM has no intention of joining the opposition. Instead, he reaffirmed their commitment to remaining in the broad-based government while urging the President to meet the party’s expectations.
“I want to assure you that ODM will not work with tribalists, but if Kenya Kwanza wants us to collaborate, we must talk and come to terms,” Junet revealed.
Junet’s comments come on the heels of Kisumu Women Representative Ruth Odinga’s call for more Cabinet positions and a larger role in the upcoming Ruto administration.
While attending the 5th Piny Luo, President Ruto encouraged the ODM party to stay united in anticipation of a potential coalition for the 2027 general elections.
Additionally, the party is insisting that President Ruto follow through on the 10-point agenda established during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the ruling UDA party and the ODM party.
