Mother of 2 dies after cosmetic surgery
A mother of two tragically passed away due to complications following cosmetic surgery in Turkey, as revealed by an inquest.
Sophie Hunt, 34, from Northampton, suffered multi-organ failure and lost her life after experiencing cardiac arrest three times on Tuesday, March 9, 2022. This occurred just two days after she underwent a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) and a tummy tuck.
Her family expressed their worries during the inquest into her death at Northampton Coroner’s Court, stating that they felt she wasn’t in good enough health for the surgery she underwent at the private Nisantasi Hospital in Istanbul.
“If she hadn’t had the surgery, she would be alive still,” her sister Aimee Hunt told the BBC.
“They still haven’t stated what the complications were. It’s not really an answer. No one can really tell,” she added.
She added that the family “want more answers” over Ms Hunt’s death.
The inquest revealed that Ms. Hunt was rushed to the Avrupa Safak Hospital in Istanbul by ambulance, a facility known for its specialized cardiac intensive care unit, where she unfortunately passed away later on.
During the court proceedings, Sandra Hunt, Ms. Hunt’s mother, shared that her daughter lost consciousness following the surgery and experienced swelling in her hands.
Sandra mentioned that the hospital’s documentation indicated “some of her ECG (electrocardiogram) readings show an abnormal heartbeat,” which she was informed was concerning.
She expressed, “We believe she wasn’t in a good condition for the surgery.”
Additionally, she raised worries that there might have been complications from the BBL procedure if too much fat was either injected or removed from Ms. Hunt’s body.
The coroner, Sophie Lomas, told the inquest that because Ms Hunt died in another country, she “does not have the jurisdiction to fully investigate what happened in that hospital”.
Ms Lomas added: “I have to reach the findings on the information I do have.”
“Sophie Hunt died due to complications of a surgical procedure carried out whilst abroad,” she concluded.
A report provided by Turkey’s Council of Forensic Medicine said: “The individual had no known medical illnesses.”
It was mentioned that she underwent an abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, along with liposuction on March 7, 2022, just before she experienced a “sudden loss of consciousness.”
The investigation in Turkey revealed that Ms. Hunt passed away “as a result of the abdominoplasty and liposuction procedures and the complications that arose afterward.”
When Ms. Hunt’s body was brought back to the UK, a post-mortem examination was conducted by Professor Kevin West.
The coroner reported that Prof. West determined her death was due to complications from the surgery, but he noted that the “exact cause of cardiopulmonary arrest remains unclear.”
Aimee Hunt expressed her concerns about her sister traveling abroad, citing the risks involved, as “it seemed like a big surgery to have.”
“Sophie was outgoing, funny, fun to be around, caring, kind and a brilliant mum,” she added.
