President William Ruto on Thursday arrived at Nyayo National Stadium to lead the nation in marking this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations. His entry into the stadium was met with excitement as thousands of Kenyans gathered for the national holiday.

The First Lady, Mama Rachel Ruto, had arrived a few minutes earlier, taking her seat among other dignitaries. Dressed elegantly in a vibrant Ankara outfit, she was accompanied by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who also received warm cheers from the crowd.

President Ruto, wearing a crisp black suit, stepped out of his motorcade after a smooth 15-minute drive from State House. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri before proceeding to the ceremonial vehicle stationed at the track.

The Head of State then embarked on the traditional lap of honour around the stadium. Rachel Ruto later joined him, waving to the cheering crowds as the vehicle moved slowly along the track.

Just before the President’s arrival, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki had also made his entrance. He attended the ceremony accompanied by his wife. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi walked in shortly after, joining other senior government officials who had begun taking their positions in the VIP section.

The guest of honour for this year’s celebrations, Ghanaian President John Mahama, arrived a short while before President Ruto. He was officially received by Deputy President Kindiki and Mudavadi, underscoring Kenya’s diplomatic ties with West Africa.

Immediately after stepping into the stadium, President Ruto inspected the guard of honour mounted by the Kenya Defence Forces. He saluted the officers and took time to acknowledge the disciplined services for their continued commitment to defending the nation. The inspection was followed by a well-choreographed military procession that showcased the precision and coordination of the troops.

Ruto then greeted executive and legislative leaders, foreign envoys, and other invited guests as per state protocol.

To set the mood for the celebrations, the National Guard delivered a spirited performance featuring traditional marching tunes, drumming, trumpets, and synchronized movement. The display blended music and military discipline, adding colour and ceremonial flair to the national event.

These opening activities officially ushered in the 2024 Jamhuri Day festivities at Nyayo Stadium.
