CS Wandayi will vie for Presidency in 2027
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has shared his thoughts on the possibility of running for president in the upcoming elections. He pointed out that there isn’t a strong candidate from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party who could effectively challenge for the top position.
During an interview on Ramogi TV this past Thursday, Wandayi made it clear that he has no intention of running against President William Ruto. Instead, he expressed his commitment to collaborating with Ruto beyond the year 2027.
“As the ODM party, we have been looking for the presidency for the last five elections, but unfortunately, we have never got it. Now that is water under the bridge,” he revealed.
Adding, “The question is, is there an ODM member who is ready to vie for the presidency so that we can support him? As for me, I am not ready to vie for the presidency in 2027, maybe after 2027.”
During the interview, Wandayi emphasized the need for a clear political direction within ODM, cautioning that ongoing tensions could jeopardize the party’s future. He also called on ODM politicians to remain level-headed and make wise choices.
Wandayi went on to accuse some party members of trying to create divisions through populist remarks, urging them to rise above such politics and provide real alternatives for Kenyans.
“Everyone is allowed to express themselves freely, be it a preacher or even a businessperson. But when you talk and criticise something, make sure you provide an alternative so that we can evaluate the alternative to see whether it is viable,” Wandayi said.
He made it clear that his choice to collaborate with President William Ruto’s administration shouldn’t be met with criticism. He explained that taking on the role of a CS was all about serving the interests of every Kenyan.
“Our decision to work in the government is not for individual benefit. Today, I am a cabinet secretary, but tomorrow, I might be removed from the cabinet position; life must continue,” he added.
Wandayi shared his thoughts on the political shifts we can expect as we approach the 2027 elections, pointing out that there are really just two main political groups in the country.
He believes that the upcoming general elections will primarily be a showdown between the camp of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and President Ruto’s faction. He also mentioned that the ODM party seems to have a slim chance of making a serious bid for the presidency.
Wandayi observed that while Gachagua’s camp has already laid out its political strategy, ODM is left with little choice but to align itself with Ruto’s side for the next elections.
“Should we, as ODM members or the Luo community, front our own candidate for the presidency in 2027? Or should we continue uniting with Ruto? Because Gachagua and his team have already outlined their plan, and we can not fit in,” Wandayi commented.
