ODM to ratify Oburu’s appointment
A key body within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is set to convene next week to officially confirm Oburu Oginga as the new party leader.
The National Governing Council (NGC) will hold a special session in Mombasa next Thursday, just in time for the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
NGC members are encouraged to arrive early in Mombasa for the convention, which will focus on the agenda item of ‘ratifying appointments to party positions.’
“We’ll be in Mombasa on the evening of Thursday, November 13, 2025, to confirm the appointment of our party officials, including Dr. Oburu as our main leader,” said Makadara MP George Aladwa, who chairs the Nairobi County Branch.
The Siaya Senator was appointed as the acting party leader on October 16, 2025, by the National Executive Council (NEC), just a day after the passing of his brother in India.
Last week, the party’s Central Management Committee gathered in Nairobi and unanimously agreed to support his appointment.
“This is the first meeting of the committee since the loss of our party leader, and we wholeheartedly endorse Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga as the new party leader. We urge all party members to give him their full support and cooperation as he leads us through this challenging time,” stated Secretary General Edwin Sifuna following the CMC meeting.
In the lineup for confirmation are several officials, including the three deputy party leaders: Vihiga Senator Godffrey Osotsi, along with governors Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir from Mombasa and Simba Arati from Kisii.
Additionally, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga is set to be confirmed as the new party chairman, taking over from John Mbadi, who stepped into the role of Treasury Cabinet Secretary last August. This change is part of a broader restructuring.
Mombasa’s Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Kisii’s Governor Simba Arati have taken the places of former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, both of whom have also joined the cabinet.
Meanwhile, the ODM Central Management Committee has expanded the deputy party leader positions to three, appointing Osotsi as the third deputy.
