Oscar Sudi Mourns Raila Odinga
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has expressed his deep sorrow over the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, calling him a father figure and a political mentor who profoundly influenced his views on leadership and public service.
While speaking from his home in Eldoret, accompanied by Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea and several other MPs, Sudi shared that Odinga was not just a personal friend but also a unique politician who consistently prioritized the nation’s interests over his own.
“Raila truly believed Kenya was bigger than him, and that is why he always put the nation first,” Sudi said.
Sudi spoke highly of Odinga, describing him as a wise and selfless leader who stayed grounded despite his prominence. He reminisced about how Odinga would frequently take calls from everyday citizens, showcasing his humility and genuine connection with the people.
Sudi pointed out that many of today’s political figures, regardless of their affiliations, have learned valuable lessons from Odinga’s resilience and the sacrifices he made.
“He always called me his son, and I always referred to him as Mzee,” Sudi said, adding that his close relationship with the Odinga family began through the late Raila’s son Fidel Odinga.
He painted a picture of the former prime minister as a leader who was both respectful and sociable, someone who never held any animosity towards his rivals.
“During the last elections, Raila and President William Ruto spoke at least four times as votes were being counted,” Sudi revealed. “We assured him that regardless of the outcome, we would remain friends.”
Sudi dropped some hints about the behind-the-scenes details of how the current broad-based government came together, mentioning that more information will be shared in due time.
“There’s a lot we could say about how this government came to be, but for now, let us mourn our father, Odinga,” he said.
He praised Odinga for his remarkable patience and his knack for listening before making decisions—traits that have won him respect from people across the political spectrum.
Sudi and Kapkea shared their plans to set up large screens in Eldoret, so residents can participate in the ongoing national mourning activities for Odinga. These screens will be placed at Zion Mall and Eldoret Sports Club.
Kapkea expressed that young politicians all over the nation owe their freedoms and the political opportunities they enjoy to the hard-fought battles led by Odinga. He also took a moment to thank the former prime minister for the support he has extended to President Ruto and the current administration.
“Odinga’s legacy will live on in the freedoms we enjoy and the unity he preached,” Kapkea said.
