Man Dies Seeking Justice
A somber mood engulfed the Bungoma Law Courts on Tuesday after an elderly man collapsed and died while waiting for his case to be heard. The heartbreaking incident, confirmed by the Judiciary, occurred early in the morning and has left court officials and the local community in shock.
According to a statement released by the Judiciary, the unidentified man, who appeared visibly unwell, arrived at the court premises around 9 a.m. He had traveled there on a motorcycle, accompanied by his brothers, hoping to have his matter mentioned before the Environment and Land Court. Upon arrival, a customer care officer noticed his condition and gave him a “Priority Card” to help speed up the hearing of his case.
The man, however, told the officers that he would wait for his lawyer before proceeding. Together with his brothers, he sat on the grass compound within the court premises to rest as they waited. Sadly, when a court official later approached to update him on the status of his case, they found that the elderly man was unresponsive.
Security officers at the court quickly alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and confirmed that he had passed away. His body was later moved to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation and further procedures.
In a statement, Judiciary Spokesperson Hon. Paul Ndemo described the incident as deeply tragic and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
“This is a very unfortunate incident. We stand with the family during this painful moment and pray for strength and comfort as they come to terms with the loss,” Ndemo said.
The Judiciary has since reaffirmed its commitment to treating all court users with dignity and compassion, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and persons with health challenges.
The man’s sudden death has sparked conversations about access to justice for the elderly and the need for improved health support systems within court environments.
