Ex-Governor Arrested Over Corruption
Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati is set to spend the night in police custody as he prepares for his court appearance on Tuesday, September 2.
He made his way to the Integrity Centre headquarters in Nairobi on Monday after receiving a summons from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
The EACC had previously announced that it obtained the go-ahead from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to bring charges against him and several of his associates.
Wangamati is facing allegations of embezzling public funds during his time as the head of Busia County.
On Friday, August 29, the EACC revealed that besides Wangamati, they have identified over 10 other individuals of interest connected to companies suspected of being involved in the misappropriation of county funds.
“The accused named above are directed to present themselves at the EACC Headquarters, Integrity Centre, on Monday, 1st September 2025, at 8:00 am for processing and arraignment,” EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said in the statement.
On Monday afternoon, Wangamati found himself at Kilimani Police Station, where he’s set to spend the night.
As he discussed his troubles in the Ksh70 million embezzlement case, the former governor, who led Bungoma for a single term from 2017 to 2022, asserted that he’s the target of a political witch hunt.
He connected his arrest to the upcoming 2027 Bungoma elections.
In another development, Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok, who’s also under scrutiny by the EACC, showed up at the commission’s headquarters after a failed attempt to prevent his detention through the High Court.
In his plea, Barchok claimed that his rights to fair administrative action, political participation, and dignity were at risk due to the EACC’s decision to send a file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) suggesting his prosecution.
The Bomet County leader is facing serious allegations of money laundering and unjust enrichment, involving millions of shillings.
