The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested two individuals connected to a shocking case of mob justice that took place in Nyamira County on Saturday, July 6. In this incident, a man suspected of theft was thrown into a fire.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 30, the DCI revealed that detectives from Nyamira North utilized forensic analysis to identify and apprehend the two suspects, who are now in police custody and awaiting trial.

A video showing the two men brutally attacking the suspected thief and ultimately throwing him into a blazing fire has gone viral on social media.

“The suspects were captured on distressing footage that has since gone viral on social media, depicting them mercilessly assaulting a man suspected of theft and ultimately tossing him into a burning fire,” DCI stated.

“Through forensic analysis, detectives trailed the suspects and apprehended them. They are currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment. Through forensic analysis, detectives trailed the suspects and apprehended them,” it added.

The detectives expressed strong disapproval of the event, urging citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. They emphasized that security agencies are prepared to take serious legal action against anyone involved in mob justice.

According to the detectives, it’s crucial for Kenyans to step back and allow the authorities to handle offenders appropriately.

“The National Police Service expresses deep concern over the alarming rise in cases of mob injustice incidents and their severe implications for public safety,” DCI stated.

“The public is urged to allow the justice system to take its course, as taking the law into one’s own hands will be met with the full force of the law,” it added.

In Kenya, getting involved in mob justice—often seen as a form of extrajudicial punishment—can have serious legal repercussions, including long prison terms.

If someone dies as a result of mob justice, those participating could face murder charges, which might lead to life behind bars.

Even if no one dies, individuals can still be charged with assault or conspiracy to commit violence, potentially facing up to 14 years in prison.
