Kindiki’s new role come 2027 in UDA
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has made it clear that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki will continue as their running mate for the 2027 general elections, putting to rest any rumors about potential changes within the ruling coalition.
During a press briefing at the party’s headquarters on Friday, February 27, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar emphasized that the party’s stance on the deputy president remains solid, despite the ongoing political chatter.
“While everyone is entitled to their opinions—and we welcome them as part of the negotiation process—I’ve heard those views. But for us at UDA, Professor Kindiki is our Deputy President and running mate for 2027,” Omar stated.
His comments come at a time when political discussions are heating up, especially among some leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), who have shown interest in the deputy president position as the next elections approach.
The ODM faction, led by party leader Oburu Odinga, is reportedly advocating for a fresh look at the political positions within the larger political framework.
On the other hand, leaders from the Mount Kenya region who are aligned with UDA are standing firm, insisting that the deputy president’s role is not open for discussion.
They believe that Kindiki has shown unwavering loyalty and commitment in his position and rightfully deserves the party’s support as they head into the upcoming election cycle.
Former UDA Secretary General Veronica Maina came to the party’s defense regarding their earlier decision to back Kindiki’s nomination, asserting that his performance has validated their choice.
“Thanks to his steadfast loyalty and the support of the people of Kenya, Professor Kindiki has proven us right in 2024 when we recognized him as the best candidate for the role of the country’s second-in-command,” she stated.
This announcement puts President William Ruto in the spotlight as he navigates complex political strategies to strengthen his backing ahead of the 2027 elections.
Leaders from UDA expressed their confidence that the party is firmly in control of the political landscape, citing their recent by-election wins as proof of ongoing grassroots support.
In these mini polls, UDA successfully claimed all four contested seats, despite a low voter turnout.
In Isiolo South Constituency, Mohammed Tubi triumphed with 7,352 votes, defeating Jubilee’s Bina Tubi, who received just 634 votes.
In Embu County, Duncan Muratia secured the Evurore seat with 7,853 votes, while Peterson Njeru won the Muminji ward seat with 3,207 votes. Elphas Shalakha took the West Kabras seat in Kakamega County with 3,317 votes.
Omar dismissed critics who questioned the party’s dominance in some of the areas.
“You guys are simplistic in this Kenyan politics. That was Raila’s base. Look at where it has moved. That’s why we have not lost an election in that area since,” he stated.
