Patient Dies After Tooth Extraction
A family in Kawangware is on a quest for justice after their loved one passed away due to complications following a poorly executed dental procedure.
The late Amos Isoka had gone to a local clinic for a tooth extraction, a decision that ultimately changed his life forever.
Unfortunately, his health took a turn for the worse, prompting him to seek further medical help. When Amos returned to the clinic for additional care and a referral letter, he felt dismissed by the practitioner, who refused to acknowledge his concerns or provide a transfer note, even after performing the procedure.
Before he passed away, Amos shared that during his visit, he was advised to get a scan at Mbagathi. He was told he needed a transfer letter from the doctor who had treated him, but the practitioner insisted it was not his concern.
The family quickly took him to Wema Hospital, where the doctors suspected that his illness might have stemmed from using unsterilized dental tools. He was admitted and put on strong medication, including antibiotics, but unfortunately, he didn’t show much improvement.
Later on, Amos was moved to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he spent a week. Sadly, his condition worsened, and he passed away after developing severe chest and breathing issues.
After his death, Amos’s wife shared that the doctors had told her he needed chest surgery due to complications from pressure that had developed overnight. She mentioned that his health took a sudden turn for the worse, leading to respiratory failure.
“I was told that Amos needed chest surgery because he had developed pressure issues the previous night. He stopped breathing and was taken for CPR, but he passed away at around 11 p.m.,” she said.
She further expressed anguish over what she described as a lack of compassion following his death, saying she was immediately asked to clear hospital bills.
“I was told Amos has passed on and that I should clear the bill. I was confused — should I clear the bill or focus on looking at my husband’s body? I am appealing to the government for help so that we can take Amos back home to Kitale,” she said.
Amos’ brother expressed the family’s frustration with how the situation has been managed, emphasizing that they are now looking for justice rather than financial compensation.
“We’re really upset because the doctor who was involved didn’t treat us well. All we want is justice. We don’t have the money. It was Amos and I who were supporting our mother,” he shared.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has confirmed that the medical facility linked to the failed procedure has been operating without proper authorization.
