Chief and Nyumba Kumi Kill a Man in Nyamira
A family in Nyamira County is calling for justice after the tragic death of their loved one, who passed away weeks after an alleged violent incident involving an assistant chief and members of the Nyumba Kumi.
Reports indicate that 39-year-old Eric Mokaya sustained severe injuries on December 11, 2025, during a confrontation with the local assistant chief, Richard Gichana, who accused him of transporting illegal alcohol.
While the assistant chief has denied any wrongdoing, medical records reveal that Mokaya ultimately died from blunt force trauma, which led to a fractured skull.
Mokaya’s wife, Diana Kerubo, shared that the situation escalated when the assistant chief physically attacked her husband, causing him to fall, and then others joined in the assault.
“The assistant chief kicked my husband on the leg until he fell to the ground. Then the Nyumba Kumi members rushed at him and began beating him,” she said.
Kerubo went on to claim that the violence also affected her and their child, recounting an incident where she says she was assaulted right in front of their son. She explained that the assistant chief forcefully undressed her, which led the boy to step in, only for him to be attacked in the process.
“He removed the blouse I was wearing. When the child saw what was happening, he ran and asked, ‘What are you doing to mum?’ He then hit the child on the forehead with a stick,” she added.
The assistant chief has firmly denied the allegations, insisting that Mokaya left the scene and might have gotten his injuries somewhere else.
Even with this denial, Mokaya’s family is adamant that the injuries leading to his death were directly caused by the alleged assault, and they’re urging authorities to take action.
This situation unfolds just weeks after a family in Garissa dismissed claims of suicide related to the death of a GSU officer at the Kenya-Somalia border.
Garissa Town MP Dekow Mohamed has voiced serious doubts about the circumstances surrounding the death of Hussein Ahmed Sahal, who was stationed at Damajali along the border.
“A young serving police officer by the name of Hussein Ahmed Sahal, serving the country at the border of Kenya-Somalia in a place called Damajali, was brutally killed by unknown people,” he said.
The MP, speaking as both a family member and area representative, insisted that the officer’s death was suspicious and involved foul play.
“We, as the family, or as a member of parliament, we highly suspect his death to be very mysterious, and there was foreplay in the circumstances in which he died,” he added.
Dekow spoke highly of the fallen officer, highlighting their unwavering dedication to protecting the nation from insurgents at the border..
“The young officer was a very dedicated young man, serving his country at the border, trying to defend the country from insurgents from across the country. And unfortunately, it’s a huge shocker to us as a family and as the leader, which happened yesterday. And we’re here for justice,” he further said.
