Nairobi-Naivasha Highway Accident
Several people were injured early Tuesday morning following a serious road accident at Magina Centre along the busy Nairobi–Naivasha Highway, a key transport route linking the capital to the Rift Valley region.
The crash involved a passenger bus and a heavy commercial lorry, causing major disruption along the highway, especially as traffic volumes increase during the ongoing holiday season. Motorists experienced long delays as police and rescue teams worked to secure the scene and assist the injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the lorry reportedly veered off its lane and collided head-on with the oncoming bus. The impact was severe, leaving the front section of the bus badly damaged. Passengers seated in the front rows bore the brunt of the collision, with the driver among those seriously injured.
Residents and other road users who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash described chaotic moments as screams for help filled the air. Good Samaritans rushed to offer assistance before emergency responders arrived, helping to pull injured passengers from the wreckage. Some victims were seen lying by the roadside as they awaited medical attention.
Rescue operations were made more difficult by rainy conditions at the time of the accident. The wet road surface is believed to have reduced visibility and traction, possibly contributing to the lorry losing control. Emergency teams also struggled to maneuver equipment on the slippery ground as rain continued to fall.
Police officers later arrived at the scene and temporarily closed part of the highway to allow for rescue work and preliminary investigations. Traffic was diverted, causing congestion stretching several kilometres in both directions. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, though the exact number of casualties had not been officially confirmed by authorities by the time of reporting.
The Nairobi–Naivasha Highway has recorded numerous accidents in recent years, often linked to speeding, reckless driving, and poor weather conditions. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during rainy periods and peak travel seasons.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with police expected to release a detailed report after completing their inquiries.
