Pupil Killed as Classroom Roof Collapses
Tragically, at least one student has lost their life, and several others are facing serious injuries after strong winds wreaked havoc on classrooms at Pascal Academy in Nakuru East, Nakuru County.
Reports indicate that this devastating event took place on the afternoon of Friday, January 16, while students were inside their classrooms, leading to an urgent response from emergency services.
Witnesses described how a fierce gust of wind swept through the school grounds, tearing off the roofs of classrooms and causing some temporary structures to collapse.
Desks, educational materials, and debris were strewn across the classrooms and playground, painting a stark picture of the destruction left in the wake of the sudden storm.
As the wind picked up speed, both teachers and students found themselves in a panic, scrambling for safety as debris rained down on the classrooms. Tragically, this chaos resulted in the death of one student and left several others injured.
Emergency responders were quickly notified, and community members rushed to the scene to help the injured students, most of whom were local residents.
Witnesses have reported that the school is relatively new and was built on land known to be vulnerable to cyclones, raising serious concerns about the decision to establish the school in such a risky location.
In the meantime, the injured students were swiftly taken to nearby hospitals, and investigations are currently underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to this heartbreaking incident.
This latest tragedy has ignited worries among Kenyans regarding the safety of students in schools, especially as they just began their first term after the school’s reopening last week.
This incident follows a warning from the Kenya Meteorological Department, advising residents in various parts of the country to prepare for strong winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s).
According to Kenya Met, strong winds are expected to sweep through the Coastal region, Rift Valley, Nyanza, and both western and Central Kenya over the next week, lasting until January 20.
The weather department has issued a warning that these powerful winds could cause significant damage, such as destroying buildings, uprooting trees, and posing serious risks to boats at sea.
