Cyrus Jirongo was born on March 21, 1961, in Lugari, Kakamega County. He went to Mang’u High School from 1978 to 1981 and later graduated from the University of Egerton in 1986.
As a veteran politician, Cyrus Jirongo played a significant role in Kenya’s political scene for many years, leaving a legacy filled with ambition, controversy, and resilience before his untimely passing.
He gained a reputation early on for his knack for political organizing, rather than coming from a traditional professional background.
The former Member of Parliament for Lugari pursued a degree in Business Administration at Cambridge University in the UK.
Jirongo shot to national fame in 1992 as the head of Youth for KANU 92, a significant political lobby group that rallied behind President Daniel arap Moi during Kenya’s first multiparty elections.
Back then, the group was instrumental in mobilizing support and raising funds, which catapulted Jirongo into the spotlight as one of the most influential young political figures of the early ’90s. Interestingly, he also held the position of chairman for AFC Leopards Football Club in 1991.
This role really boosted his public image beyond just politics. Back in the 1990s, Jirongo got involved in a bunch of business ventures, especially in real estate and agriculture. He even claimed to have hit billionaire status at a young age.
But as time went on, many of these businesses racked up significant debts, leading to a series of legal and financial troubles. In 1997, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency.
Fast forward to 2002, when President Moi appointed him as the Minister for Rural Development in the last KANU government. He lost his parliamentary seat in the 2002 general election but made a comeback in 2007 with his own party, the Kenya African Democratic Development Union. From 2008 to 2013, he was the sole Member of Parliament representing that party.
In 2013, Jirongo showed interest in running for president but ultimately aimed for the Kakamega Senate seat, which he didn’t win. He backed Raila Odinga in the presidential race. By 2017, he was in the presidential race again under the United Democratic Party but only managed to secure a tiny fraction of the national vote.
Later, his party joined the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the 2022 elections. After the election, he was quick to congratulate President William Ruto. Since the mid-2000s, Jirongo has been grappling with increasing debts tied to bank loans and private lenders.
Several courts ruled against him in cases related to loan recoveries. In 2017, the High Court declared him bankrupt after he failed to pay back loans totaling hundreds of millions of shillings.
Properties linked to his companies were either put under receivership or auctioned off. Courts also ordered him to repay significant amounts to individuals, including trade unionist Francis Atwoli.
Jirongo is polygamous and has a big family. He’s openly talked about having wives from various communities. In 2025, he faced a personal tragedy with the passing of one of his daughters, Elizabeth Lorraine Khalamwa, after a brief illness.
She passed away on March 10, 2025.
