Kajwang’s Wife Dies Suddenly Today
On Thursday, October 30, the ODM Party shared the sad news of Mama Rose Kajwang’s passing, who was the widow of the late Homa Bay Senator Gerald Otieno Kajwang.
In their statement, ODM extended heartfelt condolences, emphasizing the profound sorrow felt not just by the family but also throughout the broader political community.
“We mourn the passing of Mama Rose Kajwang’, widow of the late Sen. Gerald Otieno Kajwang’ earlier today after an illness. As Orange family, we commiserate with the entire Kajwang’ family and the people of Suba North for the loss. May Rose’s soul Rest in Peace,” the statement read.
Rose found herself in the limelight for a brief moment in January 2022 when Kajwang’s family took their dispute to court over how to split the late lawmaker’s estate, with differing opinions on the fair way to share it. The former senator’s wealth was caught up in a heated battle for control of the estate between his two widows, causing significant delays in the distribution.
The late senator’s brother, Joseph Okoto Ajwang’, has also stepped into the ring, filing a case to claim his share of the multi-million estate.
Kajwang’s contested fortune includes properties in Nairobi and Nyanza, along with shares and savings in various SACCOs like the Bunge Sacco, several vehicles, and an undisclosed sum tucked away in bank accounts.
On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, Okoto, represented by lawyer Silas Atonga, argued in court that a property in Lavington and another plot in Migori should be excluded from the late senator’s estate.
He contended that even though these properties were registered in Kajwang’s name, they didn’t actually belong to him.
“Our client had interest on the properties. He believes the two belong to him and so they should not be included. That is the reason we are objecting,” said the lawyer.
Justice Lydia Achode also learned that Kajwang’s father, David Ajwang, who passed away in February 2021, had been against including a piece of land in Lambwe West as part of Kajwang’s estate.
“Being the father, he wasn’t against the valuation itself, but he had personal property in Lambwe that he believed shouldn’t be included in the valuation,” Ajwang’s lawyers explained.
