On Monday, October 6, police officers came to the rescue of a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officer who had been tied up, blindfolded, and locked in the trunk of a car by a group of suspected armed robbers.

According to a statement from the National Police Service (NPS), the dramatic rescue took place in the early morning hours in Kinoo, Kiambu County. Officers on patrol had received a tip about a suspicious vehicle in the area and quickly sprang into action.

When they approached the vehicle, the people inside tried to make a run for it, leading to a chase that ended with two suspects being apprehended.

Upon searching the vehicle, the police found a man who had been bound and blindfolded, trapped in the trunk. It turned out to be a KWS officer who was on his way to Nairobi.

The officer later told the police that the suspects had stolen money from his mobile wallet. He also mentioned that the gang had been targeting and robbing passengers along that route, indicating a troubling pattern of criminal behavior in the area.

The police have recovered several stolen mobile phones from the suspects they arrested, which serves as evidence for multiple robberies.

Investigations are still underway, with law enforcement continuing their efforts to track down and catch additional suspects who managed to escape during the chase.

The seriousness with which the judicial system addresses such crimes was recently highlighted when a court in Ngong handed down life sentences to three men for their involvement in a violent robbery.

In late September, Brian Kutitila Wanyama, Japhnae Wanyonyi Mukalama, and Thomas Wakoli Malava were found guilty of robbery with violence after prosecutors presented strong evidence against them.

The three had brutally robbed a victim in Kibiku, Kajiado West, on December 18, 2021, making off with a mobile phone, a memory card, shoes, and even transferring money from the victim’s mobile account before assaulting him.

In this case, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) successfully established all the elements of robbery with violence beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to life sentences for all three men.

Additionally, one of the defendants, Thomas Wakoli Malava, received another life sentence for a different violent robbery that took place in September 2021, during which he and his accomplices stole property valued at Ksh 227,000 from a victim in Oloolua, Kajiado North.
