Driver Dies in Traffic jam along Mai Mahiu-Nairobi Road
Police are looking into a tragic incident where a driver was discovered dead in his cabin while stuck in a traffic jam on the Mai Mahiu-Nairobi Highway in the Mutarakwa area of Kiambu County.
According to the police, the engine of the trailer he was driving was still running when he was found unresponsive on Sunday morning.
The long-distance trailer was en route to Nairobi from an unknown location when the unfortunate event occurred. The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Patrick Tsuma Okuon.
Concerned motorists noticed the trailer had stalled on the Mutarakwa-Mai Mahiu stretch and decided to check on the driver, only to find him unresponsive.
The lorry had been at the scene for nearly an hour, creating a significant traffic jam.
Other road users alerted the police, who arrived and confirmed that the man had passed away at the wheel.
It appears he had put the vehicle in neutral and left the engine running before his death. One of his feet was still on the brake pedal, and police noted that it was fortunate the incident didn’t occur on a slope.
Upon investigation, officers found some medications in the driver’s cabin, suggesting he may have been suffering from a health issue.
The body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy, while the lorry was transported to the local police station.
Authorities have informed the driver’s relatives about the incident to aid in the ongoing investigation into this sudden death.
In a separate incident, a man who was presumed dead and buried in a village in Chwele, Bungoma County, shocked the community by resurfacing at home.
This unexpected turn of events led the police to exhume the body from the grave and return it to the mortuary for identification.
Locals in Lurende village had believed the deceased was the owner of the property and had buried him. Days later, he reappeared, leaving the community in disbelief, according to police reports.
This prompted the locals to notify the police. Western police commander Issa Mohamud stated that his team has taken the matter to court.
“There must have been a mix-up of the bodies, but we are working to solve the incident,” he said.
The exhumation happened on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
According to the police, they’re actively working to get to the bottom of this case. Part of their efforts will include identifying the remains, which may involve reaching out to potential relatives.
