Six Family Members Die In Accident
A somber mood has engulfed Ndia village in Kariara Ward, Gatanga Constituency, after six members of one extended family perished in a devastating road accident along the Murang’a–Thika road. The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when a matatu they were traveling in lost control and plunged into the Kiama River at Wacengu Bridge.
According to police reports, the ill-fated matatu was ferrying family members who were returning home from a dowry ceremony held in the Nazareth area of Kiambu County. The joyous occasion had just wrapped up hours earlier, but what was supposed to be a safe journey home turned into an unimaginable tragedy.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle appeared to be speeding when it veered off the road before crashing through the bridge’s guardrails and landing in the river below. Local residents rushed to the scene and helped rescue some of the passengers before emergency services arrived.
Six people died on the spot, among them a husband and wife whose identities are being withheld until their relatives are formally notified. Six other passengers sustained various injuries and were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals — four to Kirwara Hospital and two to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital — where they are receiving treatment and remain in stable condition.
Murang’a County Police Commander confirmed the incident, saying preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have lost control due to slippery conditions on the road. He added that the wreckage of the matatu has been towed to the police station for inspection as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been moved to a local mortuary awaiting postmortem examinations and identification by family members.
Residents of Ndia village have described the deaths as a heavy blow, noting that the victims were well-known and respected in the community. Grieving relatives and neighbors gathered at the family’s homestead, consoling one another and praying for strength as they come to terms with the sudden loss.
