Several Dead, Three Injured After Mombasa Road Accident
A tragic head-on collision between a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and a trailer has resulted in an unknown number of fatalities along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
Reports indicate that the accident took place on the morning of Sunday, December 7, in the Masenyi area, close to Voi.
The PSV was making its way to Mombasa, while the trailer was traveling in the opposite direction. Some sources suggest that around seven people may have lost their lives in this incident, although no official confirmation has been provided yet.
Images shared by Kenyans.co.ke reveal that the front of the PSV was severely damaged, while the trailer appeared to have only minor injuries. Following the crash, both vehicles ended up off the road.
After the incident, other drivers, police, and emergency responders quickly showed up to evaluate the situation and help the survivors.
On Sunday, December 7, the Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) confirmed the incident and pointed fingers at the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for not taking action to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway.
“Kinatwa heading to Mombasa Head-on Trailer. Several travellers have died. Three people were reported to have survived with serious injuries. We blame it on KeNHA’s 20-year lack of making the highway dual,” MAK said.
A tragic accident took place just two days after another crash on Friday, December 5, when a PSV vehicle flipped over in Bumala, Busia County, resulting in the loss of four lives.
Reports indicate that this latest incident happened in the Wakhungu area of Nangina Ward, within the Funyula constituency, as the victims were making their way from Bumala town to Port Victoria.
Photos shared reveal the wreckage of the vehicle, with local residents and authorities working together to carry out rescue operations at the scene.
According to Richard Moracha, the OCPD of Samia Sub-County, a tragic accident claimed the lives of a female driver and two male passengers. Meanwhile, the injured survivors were quickly taken to Nangina Mission Hospital for medical care.
Initial reports indicate that the vehicle suffered a burst front tyre, which led to the driver losing control.
Moracha also reassured the public that security agencies have already begun an investigation to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
