Man commits suicide after killing wife
Police in Nakuru County are looking into a tragic incident where a man took the life of his estranged wife before ending his own in the Teachers area.
The man, named Stephen Gathoni, reportedly strangled his 25-year-old wife, Monica Njeri, in her home early Friday morning.
After leaving her body on the bed, he returned to his own house, which is about 300 meters away, and hanged himself with a rope.
Authorities say the couple had been living apart due to ongoing domestic issues.
Their five-year-old daughter witnessed the horrific act and remained with her mother’s body until morning, when she finally told the neighbors.
The little girl recounted to the police that her father had come to visit them at night and used a binding wire to strangle her mother.
A neighbor discovered the body after stopping by to ask for access to charge her Kenya Power and Lighting token meter, which led her to notify the police.
The girl then guided officers to her father’s rented home, where they found him hanging from a blue rope. A suicide note and two pesticide containers labeled Duo Dip and Ciper Dip were found on a table nearby.
Both bodies have been taken to the Nakuru County Morgue, where they will await postmortem examinations.
Sadly, suicide cases have been increasing across the country, despite ongoing awareness campaigns.
The World Health Organization points to common factors such as unemployment, financial struggles, legal issues, depression, and substance abuse. Authorities are encouraging anyone facing mental health challenges to reach out for help.
In a separate case, police in Muhoroni, Kisumu County, are investigating the death of a 56-year-old woman whose decomposing body was pulled from a river in the Chemelil area.
Passers-by noticed a body floating in the Oseng’Teti River and quickly alerted the authorities. Detectives from Chemelil arrived on the scene and discovered the decomposing remains of Carena Oluch, who had been missing since October 17.
Her family has since confirmed the identity of the body, while investigations are ongoing to uncover the cause of death.
The remains were transported to Othoo Funeral Home.
