Mudavadi sends bulls in Bondo
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi recently paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga by sending a meaningful gift of bulls to his ancestral home in Opodo, located in Bondo, Siaya County.
This heartfelt gesture, rich in cultural significance, highlighted the solidarity from Mudavadi and the broader Mulembe community as the nation mourns Raila’s loss.
On Saturday, a group of elders from the Western region made their way to Bondo to deliver the bulls, which they referred to as a symbol of unity and respect for a leader who had been a pivotal figure in Kenya’s political landscape.
Dressed in traditional attire, the elders represented Mudavadi, sharing his condolences with the Odinga family.
“Today we are bringing cows from our minister in solidarity with the departed,” one elder said, referring to the late leader.
Using a symbolic proverb, one person remarked, “If you serve ugali without greens, it burns you. So we thought it was important to bring greens here. We brought cows and other items to honor the family.”
The arrival of the bulls was warmly welcomed by Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda and members of the Luo community who gathered at the homestead.
They expressed their gratitude to Mudavadi and the Mulembe delegation for their thoughtful gesture, noting that it highlighted the lasting bonds of brotherhood among communities.
Raila, who passed away on October 15 at the age of 80, is remembered as a prominent statesman whose legacy was marked by his advocacy for multiparty democracy, social justice, and constitutional reform.
His passing has plunged the nation into mourning, with people from all walks of life coming together to pay their respects.
For the Luhya community, sending bulls carries profound symbolic significance.
In traditional customs, gifting livestock represents honor, respect, and shared grief.
By sending these animals, Mudavadi underscored that Raila’s loss transcended just the Luo or Nyanza regions; it was a national sorrow that crossed ethnic and political boundaries.
The Prime CS, a seasoned politician from Western Kenya, has had a long and sometimes complicated political history with Raila.
They were once close allies in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) before choosing different paths in later elections.
Still, the gesture from Mudavadi’s delegation showcased the higher values of unity and respect during times of loss.
As the bulls were brought into the compound, mourners watched, recognizing the act as a powerful symbol of solidarity. The Odinga family, still welcoming a steady flow of mourners and dignitaries, saw this gesture as a profound expression of national unity during one of the darkest chapters in Kenya’s political history.
