A large crowd of mourners is expected to line the streets and highways as the nation comes together to pay its final respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The somber procession will begin at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), where the body will arrive from India, and proceed slowly to Lee Funeral Home. From there, it will make its way to the Parliament Buildings, where the public will have the opportunity to view the body and bid farewell to one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
The government has announced that the day will be marked with full state honors, reflecting Raila’s immense contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey, political reforms, and struggle for national unity. Flags across the country will fly at half-mast as a symbol of mourning and respect.
President William Ruto, together with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top government officials, has already arrived to pay tribute. Several former leaders, members of parliament, governors, and dignitaries from across Africa are also expected to attend the ceremony.
To ensure the event proceeds smoothly, the National Police Service has heightened security along the procession route. Officers have been stationed at key intersections to control traffic, maintain order, and provide a secure environment for mourners. Barricades have been set up to manage the large numbers anticipated at viewing points and along major roads.
The atmosphere in Nairobi is heavy with emotion, as citizens from all walks of life prepare to honor a man many have described as the father of modern Kenyan democracy. Businesses along the route have temporarily closed to allow employees to participate in the historic farewell.
Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment in India, leaves behind a powerful legacy of resilience, reform, and leadership. His final resting place will be his rural home on Sunday, where a private burial ceremony will take place, concluding a week of national mourning for a leader who shaped Kenya’s political destiny.
