New Catholic alter wine
The Catholic Church in Kenya has unveiled a new brand of altar wine exclusively reserved for use during Holy Mass, in response to growing concerns that the previous variety had become too common in local entertainment joints.
The newly introduced sacramental wine, now officially named Mass Wine, bears the distinctive coat of arms of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and carries an authorized signature to verify its authenticity. This change, Church leaders say, is meant to restore the sanctity of the wine used in celebrating the Eucharist.
According to Archbishop Anthony Muheria of Nyeri, the decision came after it was discovered that the earlier type of altar wine, once imported for liturgical use, had found its way into bars, restaurants, and liquor shops. “The newly approved wine is not for sale at any business outlet,” Archbishop Muheria told the BBC. “It is imported and owned by the KCCB and distributed solely to dioceses for use during Mass.”
For the Catholic Church, the Eucharist is the most sacred part of worship, representing the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. During Mass, the wine symbolizes Christ’s blood, which was shed for the salvation of humanity. It is consecrated by the priest and, in many cases, shared with the congregation during Holy Communion.
Many faithful have welcomed the move, saying it reaffirms the Church’s commitment to preserving reverence during liturgical celebrations. Some parishioners had expressed discomfort in recent years after noticing the former brand being served casually in social settings, stripping it of its spiritual symbolism.
By taking control of the production and distribution of altar wine, the KCCB hopes to ensure that what is used at the altar remains truly sacred and reserved for worship alone. The bishops have also reminded clergy and parish administrators to source the wine only from approved diocesan offices.
The initiative reflects a wider effort within the Kenyan Catholic Church to protect the dignity of religious symbols and reinforce the deep sense of holiness attached to the celebration of the Eucharist.
