A teenage boy has been arrested after he shot and tragically killed a ten-year-old during a dispute in a village located in Lokichogio, Turkana County. According to police, both the shooter and the victim were tending to livestock in Kanadap, Nasinyono, and Nanam wards.
The teenager, who is just 14 years old, was involved in this incident that was reported on Sunday, October 12, 2025. It’s worth noting that some herders in the area are as young as ten and carry weapons.
Witnesses recounted that the two boys had a disagreement before the 14-year-old shot the ten-year-old in the chest, resulting in his death.
After the incident, the assailant’s uncle took it upon himself to bring him to the Lokichogio police station.
Authorities are now interrogating the assailant to decide on further actions.
Meanwhile, police are working to recover the weapon that was used in this tragic incident.
In a separate case in Njoro, Nakuru County, seven men were arrested on charges of murder and cattle rustling. They were found in possession of 20 cows that had been reported stolen from Ndeffo village on October 6, 2025. During the incident, one man lost his life, according to police reports.
Later, law enforcement was tipped off about the location of the stolen cows in Teret village of Mauche, where they successfully recovered the animals along with two bows and a sword.
The suspects are currently being interrogated and are set to be arraigned on October 13, 2025, according to police reports.
In the Turkana region, there’s an ongoing operation focused on disarming residents who possess illegal firearms.
This area is part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which aims to tackle banditry. The operation has been effective in curbing crime not just in Turkana, but also in neighboring counties, despite ongoing challenges. It specifically targets Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo counties.
In addition to immediate responses, the government is also prioritizing strategic investments and sustainable development as part of its crime control strategy for Kenya’s Northern frontier and the Kerio Valley region.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized that the long-term goal is to empower local communities to actively participate in combating cattle rustling and engage in constructive nation-building efforts.
He mentioned plans to provide subsidized agricultural inputs and extension services to residents, aiming to revive farming as a viable source of income.
Murkomen also announced a new vetting process for all National Police Reservists (NPRs) to strengthen the ongoing operations.

“We are coming to dismantle not only the criminals themselves but also to bring down the entire chain that has been the cattle and livestock rustling industry,” he said.
He also shared a significant policy change that formalizes the command structure for the NPR officers. From now on, they will report directly to the Officer Commanding Police Stations (OCS) as part of a strategy to improve their operations.
