Son Burns Home After Supper Delay
A 21-year-old man from Njiru, Nairobi, will stand trial next year after allegedly threatening to kill his mother because supper was not served on time. The case, which has drawn public concern over rising domestic tensions, will proceed to a full hearing on April 3, 2026, after the accused denied all charges.
According to court documents, Samuel Muchangi is accused of threatening to harm his mother, Catherine Wawira, on the evening of October 3 at their home in Njiru Sub-County. The prosecution further alleges that Muchangi also destroyed property during the heated altercation.
Witness reports indicate that Muchangi arrived home at around 6 p.m. and demanded food. When his mother informed him that supper was not yet ready, he reportedly became enraged and began shouting threats. In fear for her life, Wawira fled to a neighbour’s house to seek safety.
Moments later, the situation escalated further. The accused is said to have set the house on fire before running away from the scene. Neighbours responded quickly after hearing Wawira’s distress calls and managed to contain the blaze, but several household items—including a bed, mattress, blankets, chairs, a table, and kitchen utensils valued at Sh50,000—were completely destroyed.
Police officers later tracked down and arrested Muchangi, who was subsequently arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts. Appearing before Chief Magistrate Kennedy Bindali, the suspect pleaded not guilty to charges of issuing death threats and malicious damage to property.
The court granted him a bond of Sh80,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh30,000, pending trial. Prosecutors have lined up witnesses, including Wawira and neighbours who reportedly witnessed parts of the incident.
The hearing is set for April 3, 2026, where the court will determine whether Muchangi’s outburst was a moment of rage or a deliberate criminal act. The case highlights growing concerns about family conflicts turning violent in Kenyan homes and the urgent need for dialogue and mental health awareness within families.
