Banking Titan Frank Ireri Dies
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of veteran banker Frank Marangu Ireri, the former Managing Director of Housing Finance, who was known for transforming one of Kenya’s oldest mortgage institutions.
He passed away at the age of 63 on Sunday, October 26, at Nairobi Hospital, where he had been recovering.
The banking expert was recognized for revolutionizing financing models at Housing Finance, now known as HF Group, when he stepped into the role of Managing Director in 2006.
At that time, the commercial bank was primarily seen as a mortgage lender struggling to keep up in a rapidly evolving banking landscape, which was increasingly dominated by aggressive commercial banks and emerging digital competitors.
By 2014, when the bank rebranded as HF Group, Ireri had successfully diversified its lending practices and established new business divisions, transforming the lender into a comprehensive financial services provider.
Under Ireri’s guidance, HF ventured into retail banking, issued corporate bonds, and built a reputation as a daring player in the industry.
He quietly departed from the group in 2018 after taking medical leave for specialized treatment.
Later on, Ireri took on the role of chairing the board of Habitat for Humanity Kenya, an NGO dedicated to helping marginalized communities secure housing, and also served as a director at Centum Real Estate, a subsidiary of Centum Investment focused on real estate.
Centum said that his “leadership, kindness, and steady presence left an enduring impact”.
Ireri’s remarkable career included a significant role on the board of the Flame Tree Group before the company made its debut on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. He also served as the Africa Operations Director for Barclays Kenya.
In addition to these roles, he held various positions at several organizations, such as Deloitte, Citibank, and the Kenya Bankers’ Association.
Irungu Nyakera, the former chairperson of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), fondly recalled Ireri’s sharp leadership skills from their time working together at HF.
