Stolen Cars Recovered in Kisumu
Police in Kisumu have made another breakthrough in their ongoing investigation into a suspected stolen vehicle syndicate, after recovering yet another car believed to be connected to a series of stolen vehicles seized earlier this week.
The latest recovery was made in Migosi Estate, where officers found a Toyota Voxy with registration number KDS 990N hidden inside a rented house. The residence is believed to belong to Evans Otieno Meda, the main suspect in the case, who remains at large. The discovery now brings the total number of vehicles recovered by the police to 12, marking a major step forward in dismantling what authorities describe as a well-organized car theft ring operating within and beyond Kisumu County.
According to Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Kimanthi, officers raided the Migosi home following intelligence reports linking the premises to the main suspect. Inside, they found the vehicle carefully concealed, suggesting that the suspects had gone to great lengths to avoid detection.
“Investigations are ongoing, and we believe this is part of a larger syndicate that deals in stolen vehicles. We are tracking down all the individuals connected to this operation,” Kimanthi said.
Preliminary checks conducted through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that only one of the 12 recovered vehicles is registered under the main suspect’s name. The remaining 11 vehicles are owned by unsuspecting individuals from outside Kisumu County, some of whom had reported their vehicles missing weeks or even months earlier.
A team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), specifically the Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) Unit, has already begun analyzing the vehicles’ chassis and engine numbers. This process is expected to help verify the true identities of the cars and determine how their registration details were altered or falsified.
Two suspects, Michael Mwaga and Peter Andei, who were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the stolen vehicle ring, are expected to appear in court on Wednesday. Police are seeking custodial orders to continue holding them as investigations progress and efforts intensify to locate the main suspect.
The recovery of the twelfth vehicle adds to growing concerns over the rising number of car theft cases in Kenya. Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant, verify vehicle details before purchase, and promptly report any suspicious activities related to car sales or storage in their neighborhoods.
