Al-Shabaab Attack In Garissa
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sadly confirmed the death of a teacher who lost his life in an attack in Garissa County, calling the incident a significant setback for both education and security.
The Commission expressed its sorrow upon learning about the tragic killing of Stephen Vundi Musili, who taught at Hulugho Primary School in Hulugho Sub-County.
According to the Commission, Stephen was “brutally attacked and killed on January 26, 2026, by suspected al-Shabaab militants.”
This incident took place in a region that has faced its share of security issues. The Commission highlighted that the teacher had been working in a challenging environment and had demonstrated remarkable dedication to his role.
TSC noted that he began his employment on January 2, 2025, and described him as “a devoted teacher who wholeheartedly committed himself to the noble task of educating students in a tough setting, showing exemplary courage and dedication.”
The Commission emphasized that his service reflected a deep commitment to his students, despite the inherent risks.
The Government, in collaboration with security agencies, has transported his body to Nairobi, where it is currently being held at Chiromo Funeral Home while arrangements are made.
TSC stated that it is “working closely with the teacher’s family to ensure they receive the necessary support for a dignified farewell.”
The Commission has also announced an official visit to the area, stating that it will be traveling alongside other relevant government agencies to Hulugho Sub-County on January 27, 2026.
The purpose of this visit is “to assess the situation on the ground and ensure the safety of its employees in the area.”
In its statement, the TSC expressed strong condemnation of the attack, labeling the killing as a “heinous and cowardly act of terror.” The Commission emphasized that this incident “has not only taken the life of a young teacher but has also jeopardized the right to education, peace, and security for both teachers and students.”
The TSC reassured the public of its commitment to staff welfare, stating that it “takes the safety and security of teachers seriously and will provide all necessary support to enhance the welfare of its employees.”
The Commission also extended its sympathies to those affected, offering “deepest condolences to the family, relatives, colleagues, and learners during this time of profound grief.”
