Junet Engaging Gachagua’s DCP Ahead of 2027 Elections
Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed has firmly stated that there’s no chance the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will team up with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democratic Change Party (DCP) as we approach the 2027 general elections.
During a discussion on Wednesday, the outspoken MP shot down the notion of any coalition talks with Gachagua, pointing to the impeached deputy president’s divisive language and tribal politics as significant obstacles to any potential political partnership.
“No, no, the DCP, we can’t discuss anything with them. Can you discuss anything with Gachagua?” Junet asked. “He’s the only impeached deputy president in Africa.”
The Minority Leader of the National Assembly has called out Gachagua for fueling tribalism and creating divisions among Kenyans based on their ethnic backgrounds. He highlighted some of Gachagua’s controversial remarks regarding different communities and their political representation.
“Because what that guy says and talks, you know, he’s talking about my community, that community, this community, shares. These ones have shares. These ones should leave Kenya. These ones are Ugandans. He’s always talking about communities and dividing Kenyans,” Junet said. “How can we discuss anything with such a person?”
Despite closing the door on Gachagua, Junet recognized that the political landscape is always shifting and unpredictable, which leaves the door open for new political alliances as we approach the 2027 elections.
“Politics is the art of the unknown. Anything can happen in politics. Friends are foes tomorrow, foes are friends tomorrow. It’s normal in politics,” he stated.
When asked if ODM would back President William Ruto in 2027, given their current collaboration, Junet was rather vague, mentioning that discussions are still in progress.
“We haven’t gotten to that point yet. We’re just beginning to talk about it. I don’t want to jump the gun,” he stated. “If the talks go smoothly, then we will definitely support him. If not, we have other options.”
When it came to the topic of supporting Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who has backed ODM leader Raila Odinga in three consecutive presidential elections, Junet acknowledged Kalonzo’s loyalty but refrained from promising ODM’s support for his presidential aspirations.
“He’s a good guy. Loyal to the core. That’s a fact,” Junet said.
However, he clarified that past coalition agreements were tied to the specific elections they were involved in and ended when those coalitions failed to secure a government.
“I recognize that Kalonzo supported Raila three times. But that support was part of the coalition-building efforts we’re currently engaged in. These parties came together to form a government, but unfortunately, they never succeeded,” Junet explained.
“So, once a government isn’t formed, coalitions are meant for that particular election they participated in. So, it ends there.”
Junet concluded by saying that it’s now up to Kalonzo to actively seek support from ODM and its leadership.
“It is him who should ask for the support. I mean, personally, he didn’t ask me to support him,” the MP stated.
