CCTV Shows Moment Nyeri Businessman Was Shot by Police Officer
Recently released CCTV footage has captured the shocking moment when a businessman from Nyeri was shot dead at close range by a police officer in Karatina town.
The victim, identified as George Gathu, was at his car wash late at night when a disagreement with a mechanic turned deadly.
This mechanic, who had previously worked for Gathu, allegedly made a duplicate key for one of Gathu’s vehicles, which sparked the argument.
The footage reveals Gathu in a heated exchange with the mechanic, insisting on getting the duplicated key back.
Things quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, catching the attention of two police officers who happened to be patrolling the area.
The CCTV footage reveals that around 11:10 p.m., the argument escalated after the officers showed up at the scene.
One of the officers, known as Police Constable Peter Mwangi, can be seen physically attacking Gathu as the situation grew more heated.
The video also shows the officer aiming his firearm at Gathu in what seems to be a mocking way before hitting him on the thighs with the gun.
As the situation escalated, Gathu was seen trying to pull away and walk off from the scene. However, the officers followed him, seemingly engaged in a conversation.
A moment later, Gathu was spotted walking away entirely, appearing to leave the confrontation behind him.
Just seconds after that, one of the officers was seen firing a shot at close range, striking Gathu in the head, just behind the ear.
He fell to the ground immediately as the officers stood by.
This incident comes just days after the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) began investigations into the tragic shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Utange, Mombasa County.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 6, IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan mentioned that the investigation was launched right after the incident and has now entered a crucial phase.
“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority launched investigations into the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy on New Year’s Eve and wishes to give a status update.
“Following the death of Dennis Ringa Swaleh at Utange-Swale Nguru, Shopping Centre, Kisauni Subcounty in Mombasa County, the investigation launched on January 2, 2026, is at an advanced stage,” the statement read.
The IPOA has shared that it has already collected a wealth of evidence and testimonies from individuals who are both directly and indirectly connected to the incident. They also mentioned that the investigation is still in progress, with more steps planned to bolster the case.
“Further, more witnesses are set to be interviewed, and some of the evidence collected will be submitted for ballistic examination,” the statement further read.
