Betty Bayo is yet to rest
Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Igonga has launched an investigation into the death of gospel musician Betty Bayo, following concerns raised by her family regarding the autopsy and medical records.
He has instructed the Directorate of Criminal Intelligence to provide an update within the next week.
Betty’s mother, Joyce Wairimu, had previously reached out to the DPP, requesting an inquest into her daughter’s passing, showing discontent with her death.
In her letter, the family expressed frustration over being denied access to the autopsy report, despite their requests. They also mentioned that they were never provided with Betty’s medical records or informed about any treatment she might have been receiving prior to her death.
Betty Bayo passed away on November 10, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Through their lawyers, Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, Wairimu shared that they have been enduring ‘unbearable pain’ as they try to comprehend how a young woman with no known health issues could die so suddenly.
In a letter dated December 9, 2025, the lawyers informed the DPP that the family firmly believes that Betty’s death might not have been due to natural causes.
The advocates pointed out that the family asserts the vernacular gospel musician had no known health issues leading up to her passing.
They also raised concerns about the rushed way the burial was handled, suggesting it ‘raises suspicion that important details about her death could have been hidden.’
They insist that an independent investigation is essential, not just to determine the cause of death but also to provide closure for those she left behind.
Betty Bayo passed away on November 10, 2025, while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The hospital reported that she experienced complications from mild acute leukemia, which led to severe bleeding.
Betty was laid to rest on November 20, 2025.
