Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a popular TikTok content creator accused of sharing false and alarming information about an alleged assassination plot.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the DCI identified the suspect as Roy Otieno Odhiambo, who was taken into custody after posting a controversial video on his TikTok account on October 20, 2025. In the viral clip, Odhiambo claimed that he had received Ksh.3.5 million to assassinate a well-known public figure.

According to the DCI, the video quickly gained massive traction across various social media platforms, sparking public concern and prompting authorities to verify the authenticity of the claims. Detectives from the Cybercrime and Serious Crimes Units immediately launched an investigation to trace the source of the video and determine whether the threats posed any real danger to the alleged target.

After several days of intelligence-led tracking, officers traced Odhiambo to a hideout in Malindi, Kilifi County, where he was apprehended without incident. The DCI stated that preliminary findings indicated the video was entirely fabricated and intended to attract online attention through sensationalism and misinformation.

“The suspect has since been processed and is awaiting arraignment in court,” read part of the official DCI statement. “Such reckless online behavior not only misleads the public but also causes unnecessary panic and wastes valuable investigative resources.”

Authorities further warned social media users against spreading unverified information, emphasizing that the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act provides for serious penalties for publishing false or malicious content online.

The DCI urged Kenyans to exercise responsibility while using social media platforms such as TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and YouTube. They reiterated that law enforcement agencies will continue monitoring digital spaces to curb the spread of falsehoods that can endanger public safety or damage reputations.

Odhiambo is expected to appear in court in the coming days to face charges related to publishing false information and causing public alarm, offenses punishable under Kenyan law.
