Museveni pays tribute to Raila
Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed his condolences alongside fellow African leaders for the passing of former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. He referred to Odinga as a “freedom fighter” and a genuine Pan-Africanist dedicated to the continent’s unity.
In a heartfelt statement released on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Museveni shared that he felt “a lot of sadness” upon hearing the news of Raila’s death. He highlighted that Odinga’s life and contributions embodied the same patriotic spirit that characterized his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, who was Kenya’s first vice president.
“Rt. Hon. Odinga has not been just a career politician. He has been a freedom fighter, in the tradition of his late father, Jaramogi Odinga. Ideologically speaking, they have been with the patriotic and Pan-Africanist orientation,” Museveni said.
The Ugandan leader shared that he has exchanged ideas with both Jaramogi and Raila over the years, highlighting their common vision for unity and integration not just in East Africa, but across the entire continent.
“Their sentiments have been for the unity of Kenya, East Africa, and Africa, including always supporting the struggles for the realisation of our dream for the East African Federation,” he noted.
Museveni shared his sorrow over Raila’s passing, especially at such a pivotal moment when Africa is still facing significant challenges in leadership and unity. He encouraged the youth to look up to Odinga’s legacy and to pursue his vision of a united Africa.
“It is important for the young people to fill the void left by such historical fighters for Africa’s future,” he said.
Museveni expressed his heartfelt condolences to President William Ruto, the people of Kenya, and the Odinga family.
Raila’s body is set to arrive in the country on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 8:00 am.
