Kangaru Boys Strike Over Assault
Tension filled the air at Kangaru Boys High School in Embu County during the early hours of Monday, October 13, 2025, as students staged a protest following the alleged assault of a Form Four student by a teacher, leading them to walk out of the school.
The unrest reportedly kicked off just after midnight when students, outraged by news that one of their peers had been beaten and injured, gathered in the school compound, chanting slogans and demanding justice. The situation escalated quickly, with stones being thrown and windows breaking as chaos unfolded.
Confirming the incident, Vincent Kitili, the Police Commander for Embu West Sub-County, mentioned that the students had actually reported the situation themselves at the Embu Police Station before they were gathered up for their safety.
“The students themselves reported the incident at Embu Police Station. We immediately swung into action, traced those who had left the school, and brought them together at Moi Stadium, where they were kept under security till morning. This was to ensure their safety before facilitating their travel home,” Katili said.
He mentioned that investigations are currently in progress to determine the details surrounding the alleged assault that sparked the unrest.
“We are probing the incident to determine exactly what transpired and whether there was any wrongdoing on the part of the teacher,” he stated.
Police officers had to patrol the town all night to keep the peace and safeguard property. By the time dawn broke, learning at the school had come to a complete halt.
The school grounds were still on edge, with shattered windows and debris scattered everywhere, a clear sign of the chaos that had unfolded overnight.
Teachers and school guards tried their best to calm the furious students, but their efforts were met with resistance, leading them to call for police backup. Even when the police arrived, they struggled to contain the anger, as some students managed to break through the gates while others leaped over the fence to escape the premises.
Journalists attempting to enter the school were stopped at the main gate by security guards, who insisted they were following orders from the administration. Multiple attempts to reach the school principal for a comment were unsuccessful, as he neither picked up calls nor replied to text messages.
