Police Bust Wildlife Traffickers in Migori
Two suspects were arrested in Migori County for possessing illegal wildlife trophies, thanks to a collaborative operation between the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
The arrests took place in the Namba area of Suna East Sub-County during a targeted interception on Wednesday, August 6.
This operation was set in motion after intelligence reports led officers to seize a blue Bajaj motorcycle that the suspects were reportedly using to transport the trophies.
The NPS praised the teamwork, emphasizing that the strong partnership between the two agencies played a vital role in the operation’s success.
“A joint operation conducted by officers from the National Police Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) on 6 August 2025 led to the arrest of two individuals in connection with the possession of wildlife trophies in the Namba area, Suna East Sub-County, Migori County,” NPS stated.
A recent search led to the discovery of six elephant tusks, weighing in at a hefty 18.8 kilograms and valued at around Ksh1.8 million on the black market.
According to the police, the suspects include a 35-year-old woman who was a pillion passenger carrying a sack with the tusks, and a 58-year-old man who was driving the motorbike.
They are currently in custody, waiting to be brought before the court on charges related to wildlife crimes.
The National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) have expressed their dedication to combating wildlife trafficking and safeguarding endangered species.
Both agencies are encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through their toll-free numbers.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of two Burundian nationals who were charged in a Mombasa court for possessing and attempting to sell elephant tusks valued at over Ksh12 million.
The duo was taken to court on Monday, August 4, just a day after being apprehended by the KWS in Miritini, Mombasa County.
Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo accused the two Burundians of dealing in 27 pieces of elephant tusks without any legal documentation.
